Chris Giunchigliani (Chris G.) is running for governor to build a Nevada that works for everyone, not just the well-connected few. And she knows that we can only do that by reaching out and listening to all Nevadans to come up with practical, meaningful solutions on critical issues like diversifying our economy, improving public education, access to mental health and protecting our environment.

Throughout her years working to make the Silver State a better place to live, raise a family and start a business, Chris has shown she has the drive, determination and proven record of results that we need in the governor’s office to move Nevada forward.

Her background:

The oldest of six children, Chris was raised in Chicago, where her mom worked as a waitress and her dad was a draftsman. From an early age, her parents instilled in her the importance of hard work and education, with her dad attending college at night to earn his degree in architecture.

Recognizing that education transforms lives, Chris paid her way through college working full-time, earning her bachelor’s degree in special education at Avila College in Kansas City. She taught special education for two years before moving to Las Vegas to earn her master’s degree at UNLV. She has taught in Nevada off and on since 1979 and continues to this day to be a licensed teacher on a leave of absence.

This year, Chris would have celebrated her 30th wedding anniversary with her beloved husband Gary, but his life was tragically cut short in a car accident two and a half years ago. Chris and Gary had lived in the same area of town since they were married, transforming their community for the better. Chris continues her commitment to service with the fervor and passion the couple inspired together. Their interests included their English bulldogs, reading, gardening, skiing and traveling. Chris and Gary explored all seven continents, experiencing diverse cultures and learning new approaches to living.

A lifetime of public service:

Elected to the Clark County Commission in 2006, Chris Giunchigliani was re-elected twice and currently holds the position of vice chair. Her fellow commissioners have selected her to serve in numerous leadership positions including chair of the Southern Nevada Regional Planning Coalition, trustee for the University Medical Center Board of Trustees and formerly as a member of the Metropolitan Police Committee on Fiscal Affairs. In her long career, several Nevada governors have appointed Chris to many leadership roles. One of the most recent appointments was by Governor Sandoval who asked Chris to be a member of the Commission on Aging.

Prior to serving on the County Commission, Chris worked as an educator for almost 30 years, also working as president of the Clark County and Nevada State Education Associations. She was elected to the Nevada State Assembly where she worked as a legislator for eight regular and five special sessions. As a legislator, Chris served as Speaker Pro Tempore and as chair of the Elections, Procedures and Ethics Committee, vice chair for the influential Ways & Means Committee and Growth & Infrastructure Committee. She also served as a member of the Taxation Committee, the Interim Finance Committee and the Legislative Commission, which manages the legislature when not in session.

Throughout her career, Chris has received numerous awards and certificates, including the Emerge Nevada’s “Woman of the Year Award” in 2017, the Las Vegas Review-Journal’s “Best Local Politician Award” in 2012, the UNLV President’s “Medal Recipient for Very Special and Distinguished Service” in 2014, the Community Ally Award from the Human Rights Campaign and the ACLU’s “Emilie Wanderer Civil Liberties Award” in 2011. Chris was also honored as the “2001 Legislator of the Year” by the Nevada Council of Police and Sheriffs and is a proud recipient of the Southern Nevada Planned Parenthood Joyce Mack Award.
